French trash politics

After the more than arguable super visit of Kadhafi to Paris last week, Nicolas strikes again (and this news kinda chases the previous lousy story). President Sarkozy is now supposedly dating ex-topmodel and now singer Carla Bruni.

I used to like Carla a LOT when I was a student : I remember my computer passwords were 'carlabruni'. Until the day I met her in person by acciden in a hotel in Paris. Holding hands with a guy who could be her grand-father. Very cold eyes. Anyways...

I find it gross that a recently divorced man, still declaring his love to his wife on Bastille Day on TV, would hang out publicly (since everything is SO controlled in his public image) with his new girlfriend, almost a 'pipole' (French for "people" press), at Disneyland... Yeah, I know, he has the tastes of his countrymen. Imagine Chirac, Mitterrand, Giscard d'Estaing, Pompidou, de Gaulle behaving the same way ?

It's like Georges W. Bush dating Britney Spears, or Tony Blair dating Baby Spice. Why not ? of course. But not exactly appropriate for a statesman and a French president.

Next up for Nicolas in 2008 : hanging out as a business angel with startups, as a VC with Sequioa (wink ! Al...), formula 1 driver with Ferrari, balloon pilot with Bertrand Piccard, partying in Ibiza, on board the America's Cup, best supporting actor for French President at the Oscar's, and daily photo call at the Elysée... as long as there are cameras...

Call me conservative from now on.

Archive videos of LeWeb3 2007 coming up tonight

Cédric Ingrand, the famous French tech journalist from LCI TV channel has just published a nice summary of last week's conference. (podcast file here - I don't have the authorization to publish a flash version...)

At vpod.tv we were proud to have been behind the live streaming at LeWeb3 (over 10,000 simultaneous connections !), and to be preparing the video archives of this year's event. They should start to appear tonight both on the site and the RSS feed. Full archives should be online by the end of the week.

You will find them on http://my.vpod.tv/leweb3, including the last 2 editions (2005 and 2006) and backstage material !

What digital camera should I ask Santa Claus ?

I've had small cameras on me for ever, including my Nokia phones (N70, N73, N90, N80, N93, N95...) and small compact ones from Sony (currently a T9).

I'm currently looking to upgrade to something more professional. My 2 interests :
- portraits (I really close ups)
- architecture (just moments of life walking by...).

Looking at the pictures of my friends on Flickr, I find that the folks who take the best pictures use the following cameras:
- Leica M8 : Guido van Nispen, Joi Ito
- Canon EOS 5D : David Sifry
- Canon PowerShot S80 : Feuillu

Other folks rave about the latest Canon 40D, the official photographer at le Web3 had a Canon EOS 350D, SashaQS had a Canon EOS 400D. And no one is using Nikon anymore ?

Please let me know your thoughts on which camera I should get, and obviously what lens to start with. I'm pretty confortable with carrying 2 lenses instead of one-size fits all.

Final note : I love the fact that Guido takes pictures with no Flash in the middle of the night, and the results are stunning...
