You all know how fond I am of the European Union political endeavour; a number of feats happened yeasterday, and I really do not understand why they are no made into more major news:
- 2 new countries joined the EU yesterday on January 1st: Bulgaria and Rumania. The European Union now counts almost 500m souls in 27 member countries. The official EU site is not yet up to date :(
- Slovenia adopted the Euro currency, making it the 13th member of the Eurozone (not counting tiny geographic artefacts such as San Marino, and Andorra...) and the first from the former Communist block, after only 17 years since the Berlin Wall came down
- Germany took over the EU presidency for 6 months. Don't expect much support for the Turkey / EU talks there... but there is some hope A. Merkel might re-initiate efforts on the European Constitution.
Let's just hope that a major part of the political program of our 2 major French presidential candidates this year are devoted to the European house.
