This little woman is an extraordinary person. At only 28, she holds the record of the fastest ever sailor to complete a solo non-stop circumnavigation of the globe.
Queen Elizabeth made her yesterday Dame Ellen Macarthur, the youngest ever Brit to be receive a 'damehood'. If nobility doesn't mean much these days, the honour is enormous and so well deserved. She joins a big clan of Brits honoured for outstanding prowess, including Sir Edmund Hillary (just made a companion of the Order of the Garter), the first ever person to climb Mount Everest. I wrote a while ago about the respect all these record-achievers inspire me.
Protocol non witstanding, hurray for Ellen !
