OK guys, don't hit on me. I know... I said April would be the month, as soon as Tiger comes out of the woods. So here is what Russ had to say:
"By the way, I'm writing this on my new 15" PowerBook G4 I got for work. I've finally done the complete switch to the Mac and am very happy! (Jeez, how long did that take me?) This particular laptop is amazing - I mean, it's so well made it's incredible. And it's great for development - it comes with Apache, Perl, Python, PHP and more already pre-installed, and as you know Mac OSX is Unix, so it's just a joy to work on. I haven't had a light laptop with decent battery life for years! It's so nice to get up, grab the computer and head out to the living room to drink my coffee and browse the web. I guess this is the modern equivalent of reading the morning newspaper (where's my pipe?). The other thing that's nice is that I don't have to "context switch" any more. I have my Mac mini at home and my PowerBook at work and I don't have to think about Windows any more at all (well, for the most part). Elle thinks that PowerBook owners are poseurs (Mike just got one too) but I disagree - I haven't felt this productive in years. I definitely need to publish a list of my essential Mac apps sometime soon."
I hear ya buddy. I have just spent part of my Sunday afternoon reinstalling my linux laptop (simple Fedora Core 3; too bad Fedora Core 4 is still in test mode, I'm not playing guinea pig this time.) since I got my configuration broken somewhere with so many kernel updates, and unstable yum sources from different places including freshrpms.net.. I'll make a ghost file of it once it's fully updated just in case.
Next on my list is a full re-install of my windows laptop. I REALLY do not look forward to it, but I guess that after more than 12 months of installing / uninstalling apps, my registry got really confused. The laptop is slower than ever, and even the recent 512Mb memory increase didn't help much. I'm also going to get a Ghost file backup just for the system. Then I'll have to go through that PAINFUL upgrade of all my favourite apps,
It's good practice for when I switch to a bi-pro G5 apple computer with a wallsize screen ;)
PS: both my laptops have batteries that are a shame. They tend to last about a dozen minutes. There used to be pieces of software to boost their life (fully drain them out, then fully recharge them). Do you know where to find those ?
I checked prices for new batteries: insane. Almost more expensive than the ebay prices of my laptops...
